River Green Restaurant
If you ever find yourself exploring the serene village of Trowse Newton in Norwich, River Green Restaurant is a must-visit gem tucked right on The Street (NR14 8AH). It’s more than just a restaurant - it’s a plant-based haven that caters to lovers of fresh, creative, and ethically sourced dishes. As someone who’s experienced the place multiple times, I can tell you it’s the kind of spot where the vibe, food, and values all align beautifully.
From the moment you step through the wheelchair-accessible entrance, there’s a warm and inclusive feel to the space. Whether you're dining solo, meeting friends for lunch, or enjoying a cozy dinner date, the ambiance feels relaxed, calm, and welcoming. Plus, the outdoor seating area is a dream when the sun’s out - peaceful, green, and perfect for sipping on something chilled from their well-curated wine list or cocktail menu.
Now, let’s talk food - because River Green Restaurant shines most when it comes to its imaginative vegetarian and vegan offerings. One of their absolute showstoppers is the Chestnut & Mushroom Wellington. Rich, earthy, and satisfying, it’s a go-to main dish that even the most dedicated meat-eater will be curious about. For something lighter, the Quinoa Salads offer a fresh, crunchy base with seasonal vegetables and vibrant dressings - ideal if you’re into healthy options.
And don’t even get me started on the small plates. The Cauliflower Manchurian is a cult favorite: sweet, spicy, and crispy in all the right ways. The Glazed Okonomiyaki Rice is another unexpected delight - fusion done right. Everything here seems thoughtfully designed for people who genuinely appreciate food, not just eat it.
Of course, you can't skip dessert - not when they serve creations like the Mulled Pear Brownie or the indulgent Banoffee Sundae. My personal pick? The Ginger Chocolate Cup with Orange Sorbet - it hits the perfect balance between zingy and rich. And yes, their vegan birthday cakes like the Vegan Brownie Cake are actually worth celebrating, not just enduring.
Coffee lovers, rejoice - they make a seriously smooth Cappuccino and an aromatic Espresso Affogato that’s just the thing after a big meal. If tea’s more your thing, you’re in good hands too - they’ve got a carefully selected tea menu that’s surprisingly extensive. It’s details like these that help River Green stand out from other vegetarian restaurants in Norwich or the broader Norfolk plant-based scene.
As for service, it’s casual but professional. You don’t feel rushed, and the staff are genuinely happy to explain what’s in each dish - which is always helpful if you have dietary needs or food allergies. This spot doesn’t offer takeaway or delivery, which at first might seem like a downside. But honestly? It encourages you to slow down and actually be present for your meal, which is kind of the point here.
Beyond the food and drinks, there’s a gentle elegance to how the space operates. The private dining room is perfect for small celebrations or gatherings. And whether you're in for a quick bite, a long dinner, or just a good cup of coffee with dessert, River Green always finds a way to feel just right for the moment.
So if you’re searching for a Norwich vegetarian restaurant that does more than just check the boxes, River Green is worth discovering. It’s a place that quietly redefines what plant-based dining can look and taste like - without ever shouting about it.
Reviews
Wonderful vegan menu, cooked to perfection. For someone with a dairy allergy, this means nothing is off limits, which is lucky because everything is tempting. Whether you're a vegan (for whatever reason) or not, you're assured of some lovely food. Still as wonderful as ever on my latest visit. Another visit today and some great menu additions/changes. This restaurant continues to impress and you don't have to be a vegan to enjoy vegan food
Went here for our Son's 18 birthday, just a quiet dinner with a friend who is non-vegan. Wonderful meal as always, our friend was most impressed with his curry and the eaton mess for afters. Love that the menu changes frequently with a few staples. Excellent service, food different and inventive and above all delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant for vegan and non-vegans to enjoy good food.
We came for lunch almost 2 weeks ago, as a party of 5. What a wonderful experience we had. This place is a gem and the food was outstanding. I had the aubergine curry and the flavours were exquisite and delicious. My rhubarb crumble and custard were divine. Every dish was creative, inspiring and beautifully presented. The tastes and flavour combinations were stunning. The staff were lovely and the service was impeccable. Two of our party were delayed with a much later than expected eta. The staff kindly gave us time to phone them for their menu choices, ahead of the kitchen closing, reassuring us we could still order desserts and coffees later, which we did. If we lived closer to Norwich, we would eat here every week! We will definitely visit again and are looking forward to the next time.
My wife and I celebrated her birthday here and we could not have picked any where better. We had three courses of absolutely delicious mouth watering food. Our taste buds were exploding with all the flavours of different spices and sauce glazes. To say we were astounded is an understatement. The restaurant has a lovely ambience, very light and clean, overlooking a small park in a nice village. The staff were very courteous and attentive. It may be a fifty mile round trip but we are going to be seeing them quite often going forward. Many thanks to all concerned for a lovely experience. Viv & Mike
